The Right Trainer Makes A World Of A Difference

Our careers require us to push for progress and keep up with the times, but we understand it’s not always easy. Here at Volt Edge, we strive to make your training experience with us personal and of quality.

High Voltage Courses

Are you looking to improve your future employment prospects? Considering becoming a High Voltage Switching Operator? Or do you simply need to refresh your current competencies?

If you aren’t aware or have never worked with High Voltage (HV) before, it can be hard to know the best high voltage course to do in order to get the competencies required, or when to refresh.

There are a few different options available depending on the type of work you are interested in doing. They are:

High Voltage Switching

high voltage switching

HV Switching courses are nationally recognised and covers the legislation, theory and practical requirements to perform the role of a High Voltage Switching Operator. To ensure relevance to real-life work, purpose built HV Switching practical training areas are essential to allow students to simulate switching in a safe environment.

Volt Edge specialises in hands-on training that mimics on-the-job responsibilities, with professional industry-experienced trainers, as seen in the image above.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will gain a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in the course units whilst gaining the required skills and knowledge.

*Prerequisites apply

High Voltage Switching Coordination

high voltage switching coordination

Whether you’re already a High Voltage (HV) Supervisor or you’re looking to become one in the future, HV Coordination courses are designed to teach students the coordination of crews of HV Operators and the interaction that may occur between one or more HV crews.

Course outcomes

Ensure that tasks are resourced, planned and coordinated using planning techniques, so that the separate exercises do not interfere or endanger the other members.

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills to:

  1. Coordinate, monitor and control local networks.
  2. Analyse and respond to local network/system faults or incidents.
  3. Review incident response and preventative procedures.
  4. Coordinate and direct switching programs.
  5. Maintain dynamic integrity of systems.
  6. Carry out the coordination of permit procedures.

*Prerequisites apply

High Voltage Recipient

high voltage recipient

The High Voltage (HV) Recipient course is designed to give students the skills and knowledge required to perform work in association with a permit system.

Permits to work are a formal system used to control high risk activities in power generation facilities, industrial and mining. They specify the control measures to be used. Permits ensure that all hazards, precautions and isolations have been considered before any hazardous work begins.

Course outcomes

Competency in this unit allows you the ability to plan and prepare for permit to work procedures, perform permit duties and complete work.

Once familiar with site, you can be signed off to receive access and test permits in a High Voltage installation, manage the processes and then surrender when finished the HV work, as part of a High Voltage switching procedure or program.

The training course will have a practical component if using an access system to plan, complete and manage a HV permit system. This is competed on two occasions, once using Volt Edge permit systems and once using your own permit systems.

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills to:

  • Receive the access permit / test permit from the switching officers.
  • Manage the work group.
  • Coordinate HV work activities.
  • Manage the working earth.
  • Complete the appropriate paperwork correctly.
  • Ensure the work group has signed off and surrender the permit to switching officers in a safe state to energise.

High Voltage Awareness

high voltage awareness

High Voltage Awareness is a non-accredited course for people working in high voltage installations.

The course is suitable for both electrical and non-electrical personnel wanting to understand the dangers and risks of working around or near High Voltage installations. Along with identifying risks and reducing hazards, students are also taught the controls required to avoid contact with energised conductors, and the simple step that can be utilised.

Course outcomes

Upon completion, you will have an awareness and be able to:

  • Work around aerials
  • Work around substations
  • Understand the dangers of induced voltage
  • Understand the risk mitigation of High Voltage.
  • Understand the dangers of high voltage.
