Certificate II in Split Air-conditioning and Heat Pump Systems
Course Description
The installation, commissioning and de-commissioning of single head, split air conditioning and heat pumps systems to a prescribed routine where the maximum plant capacity for each system does not exceed 18 kW.
This qualification excludes competencies required for service, repair, maintenance, diagnostic/fault finding and electrical work or the safe and proper installation of commercial refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump plant and equipment.
This course teaches you to assemble and position, start up single-head split air-conditioning units and systems to a prescribed routine. This includes wall hung, floor and ceiling suspended, cassette and ducted fan coil split systems and water heating heat.
Once successfully completed, you can apply for your refrigerant handling licence through Arctick.
To be eligible to undertake the course you must currently hold an Australian Unrestricted Electrical Licence.
Content Delivery
Theory Assessment (Online, Self-Paced), Practical Assessments (2 days Face to Face), On The Job Supervisor sign off of installations. One installation sign-off is completed during the course, and another must be completed onsite by a Refrigeration Mechanic. All forms will be emailed and provided in-class.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the skills to:
- Fabricate tubing and attach fittings for refrigeration and/or air conditioning systems.
- Assemble, install and start up split AC’s and water heating heat pump systems.
- Decommission split air conditioning and water heating heat pump systems.
- Test single head split AC’s and water heating heat pump systems and document.
- Recover refrigerants, pressure and leak test, evacuate and charge split systems.
- Follow a personal competency development plan.
- Complete and report refrigerants recovery, pressure and leak test and evacuate and charge work.

QLD, WA, NT, SA, ACT and TAS – Certificate II in Split Air-conditioning and Heat Pump Systems course will give you the knowledge to quote, install and design reverse cycle air conditioning units. This course is for licenced Electricians and teaches you to assemble and position, start up single-head split air-conditioning units and systems to a prescribed routine. This includes wall hung, floor and ceiling suspended, cassette and ducted fan coil split systems and water heating.
Upon successful completion, you can apply for the licence required to install and decommission single-head, split system air-conditioners up to 18 Kilowatts. This course does not have an electrical outcome, covers installing units and interconnecting pipe work.
VIC & NSW – Certificate II in Split Air-conditioning and Heat Pump Systems course will allow you to apply for the licence to handle the refrigerant gas – You CANNOT Install and decommission single-head, split system air-conditioners up to 18 Kilowatts, in your state. Please check your individual state Licensing.
*VICTORIAN Students: Upon successful completion of the course, you can apply for your Arctick licence. You can apply to VBA in relation to licencing requirements to install up to 18kW and an assessor will review your application. Further information you MUST make contact with VBA directly.
*NSW Students: Upon successful completion of the course, you can apply for your Arctick licence. This course will assist you on the path to applying for roles with other companies as an installer. Further information you MUST make contact with NSW Fair Trading directly.
