Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for A Grade Electricians
OVERVIEW
This course is a mandatory requirement for licensed electrical workers (LEWs) operating in Victoria, as part of Energy Safe’s Professional development program. Skills Maintenance training refreshes and updates licensed electrical workers’ skills to meet current industry requirements and improve safety for both workers and the community. These practical, industry-focused Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses are delivered in a single, convenient session by experienced trainers to help meet Victorian renewal requirements.

Who Should Attend
Licensed A-Grade electricians with a current licence.
CPD Training (Skills Maintenance) must be completed once every 5 years. Licenced electricians must complete the CPD course within the 2 years before renewing your licence.
For example, if your licence is due to expire on 30 June 2025, you can complete the CPD training any time between 30 June 2023 and 29 June 2025.
You must have completed the Skills Maintenance course to be eligible to renew your licence.
Course Content
What does the CPD Skills Maintenance training cover?
The course consists of roughly 60% hands-on training and 40% theory. It includes:
- Topic 1: Your Responsibilities
- Topic 2: Major Changes to Acts, Regulations and Standards
- Topic 3: Safe Isolation
- Topic 4: Mandatory Testing
Learners will attend this training as part of their licensing requirements for Energy Safe. Resources for this course have been developed and supplied by Energy Safe which are the Electrical Industry regulator.
The CPD Course run by Volt Edge in conjunction with ESV for Licenced A Grade Electricians will be carried out in 3 stages:
- Online Self-paced prior to course (Mandatory):
- Pre-Course Questionnaire
- Remote Learning in LMS (30 Mins)
- Attend in Class:
- Knowledge and Skills tasks
- End of course:
- Post course Questionnaire
Blended learning model: online modules, interactive classroom sessions and practical training.
Pre-Course Work: Enrolled students will undertake pre-learning activities online prior to attending a full day of face-to-face activities. You will receive a link to the online pre-learning activities that must be completed prior to commencing the face-to-face class.
Hours: Maximum of 8 hours face to face per session, ensuring efficient, focused learning.
Class Size: Small class sizes (Minimum 8 to a maximum 12 learners) to maximise engagement and practical experience.
Reasonable adjustments: Will be provided for learners who require extra support.
Course location: Units 12-14, 391 Settlement Road, Thomastown, Vic 3074
Fees: Covered by the Victorian State Government for the initial round of licence renewals; Free to students who hold a Victorian electrical licence.
Enrolment Requirements: Courses are open to all eligible A Grade electricians. A copy of your licence is required during enrolment process and all students must show a physical copy to the trainer on attendance.
What do I need to bring to my training?
- An electronic device with internet connectivity (e.g. tablet, phone, laptop)
- Photographic ID
- Digital or paper copies of the following (class copies will also be available):
- AS/NZS3000 Wiring Rules
- AS/NZS 4836 Safe working on or near low voltage electrical installations and equipment
- AS/NZS 3017 Electrical installations – Verification guidelines
- Electricity Safety (General) Regulations 2019
- To undertake the practical task, you must wear:
- Long sleeve top
- Enclosed footwear
- Safety eye wear
It is also recommended that you wear:
- Long pants
- Electrical gloves
Participants are also requested to bring (limited class equipment will be available):
- A Volt/Multimeter
- A Digital/Analogue IR & C tester
- A LOTO Kit
Outcomes:Only learners who attend the full course and are deemed satisfactory in completing all tasks required and complete all questionnaires are eligible to recieve successful completion.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) does not apply to CPD courses.
Questionnaires: Pre and post – learning questionnaires are included to support learning outcomes.
